Japan Expands Research Opportunities for U.S. Scientists

Sep 4, 2025

Is Japan your next research destination?

Interest in research opportunities in Japan among foreign researchers has been growing recently. JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) has a long-running fellowship program for foreign researchers from the fields of humanities, social sciences and natural sciences (these are collectively called the JSPS International Fellowships for Research in Japan). JSPS Fellowships offer a variety of excellent short-term and long-term research opportunities for mid-career researchers to professors, post-doc researchers, and pre-/post-doc researchers (summer and short-term).

In addition, many Japanese universities have recently announced that they will start recruiting foreign researchers, especially from the US. Notable examples include Osaka University, which announced that it would accept 100 young medical researchers from the US in May 2025, and Tohoku University, which is seeking 500 researchers mainly from the US for the next five years. The Cabinet Office, Government of Japan, announced the J-RISE Initiative in June 2025, aimed at creating a world-class research environment and attracting leading scientists from all over the world to Japanese academic institutions. With the launch of the JREC-IN Portal, researchers can now search for teaching and research positions across Japan in English, making entry into the Japanese academic ecosystem more accessible than ever.

For Japan, this influx of international talent supports innovation and global collaboration at a critical time. Washington CORE has been actively spotlighting these opportunities, positioning Japan as a welcoming hub for scientific advancement.
