Reproductive Autonomy and Femtech Risks

Aug 26, 2025

Zoe Kass was our Summer 2025 intern at Washington CORE and unfortunately has wrapped up her stay with us. She is a current senior at Brown University concentrating in Judaic Studies and Italian Studies, a path that has allowed her to explore her love of language learning and history. A long-time advocate for menstrual health policy, Zoe previously interned at the White House and is committed to creating change in her community. She hopes to pursue a career that allows her to shape health policy for the better.

Her final project for CORE is titled “Empowerment, Risk, and Restriction: Reproductive Autonomy in the Digital Age.” The bottom line of this presentation is that Femtech users are vulnerable to criminal investigation due to insufficient data protection and privacy practices. The report explores reproductive autonomy in the United States and the digital tools (namely, period tracking apps and telehealth abortion services) that have been introduced to support it, as well as the safety and privacy concerns and the policies (or lack thereof) that protect sensitive health data. With decreasing access to in person abortion services in legally restrictive states, Femtech services and the regulations that surround them will play a central role in the reproductive healthcare landscape.
