In Japan, “symbiotic robots,” designed to coexist with humans, are rapidly gaining visibility across society. These robots are active in a wide range of settings, supporting elderly care, assisting individuals with disabilities, enhancing industrial productivity, and helping socially isolated individuals reconnect with their communities. As global competition intensifies around AI-driven automation, Japan has taken a distinct approach by developing robots that work alongside people rather than replacing them.
Through an interview with Yukiko Hoshino of KAWADA Technologies, this article explores how human-centered robotics is evolving in Japan. From initiatives like the Tele-Barista system to industrial applications of humanoid robots such as NEXTAGE, the discussion highlights how technology, when combined with compassion and inclusivity, can expand opportunities for participation and redefine the role of robotics in society.
